A string of suicides across our country has captured the headlines. In response to these publicized few, I have decided to dedicate a post to understanding the spiritual ramifications and aftermath of this very unnecessary tragedy. Please consider this post to be a place of support for all those who have ever been affected by or thought of committing suicide. May you all feel the presence of something bigger than yourself in this world, for we are most definitely not alone.
Get ready for some ground shaking statistics as I tell you that more than 30,000 suicides occur each and every year in the United States. That’s about 80 suicides a day! In the world as a whole, nearly one million individuals commit suicide each year. Those numbers are explosive and represent individuals from every creed, color, and nationality known to man.
On September 4th 2004, my own father was unfortunately one of the approximately 80 suicides occurring that day in the U.S. After multiple attempts at suicide and many failed visits to detox programs, my father hung himself from the wooden rafters in a barn on his property. I remember having the phone handed to me, while at the same time knowing exactly what I was about to hear.
